Johstep South-Devons originate back to 1984, where this stud found its beginnings in the red dunes of the Kalahari, Northern Cape, 80km north of Kuruman. The growth ability, milk production, fertility and temperament are characteristics that made the breed attractive. With a strong belief that the breed could survive in the harsh climate and veld conditions of the Kalahari, animals were purchased in June 1984. A lifetime’s experience of commercial farming and exposure to various breeds formed the base of developing the herd.

Today, the two brothers Barrie and Gielie van Zyl, owners of JOHSTEP Stud, are still actively involved in the prosperity of the South Devon Breed. They are currently situated on the Farm Charlottesdal, 60km north of Kimberley, Northern Cape. With their vast exposure to the meat industry, due to their family business, Van Zyl Wholesale Meat, they still believe in the potential of this unique breed. Bulls are used for cross breeding because of the excellent growth and the breeding potential of the heifers.
